British Columbia Introduces Short-Term Rental Registry
January 28, 2025 | Posted by: Christopher Chanakos
The Province of British Columbia has launched a new short-term rental registry to enhance enforcement against non-compliant operators and address concerns about housing availability. Announced by Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon, the initiative targets speculators operating illegally within the short-term rental market.
Under the new regulations, all short-term rental operators using platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo must apply for a registration number, which must be displayed on their online listings by May 1. Non-compliant listings will be removed starting June 1. Annual registration fees will apply, with the following rates:
- $100 for hosts who reside on the property
- $450 for hosts living off-site
- $600 for operators of so-called strata hotels
Incentives for Early Registration
To encourage timely compliance, the province is offering discounts for early registration. Operators who sign up by February 28 will receive a 50% discount, while those registering by March 31 will receive a 25% discount.
